Admissions Policy

 

This document sets out the principles and policy which govern the admission of international students to all FIC programs.

An international applicant is one who does not hold citizenship or Permanent Resident status of Canada, or one who has provided a completed and signed Non-Resident Declaration Form.

The language of instruction at FIC is English.  International students must demonstrate a suitable level of English proficiency before being admitted to a program.

Admission criteria

Academic

In order to gain entry into FIC students must demonstrate that they have the appropriate qualifications. A guide of appropriate country specific equivalents is listed on the FIC website and in the FIC Brochure.

Age

FIC does not apply a minimum age restriction to students seeking admission to programs.  Students who are admitted to FIC programs and will be under the age of 19 at the time of commencement of studies will be required to provide proof of having secured legal Custodianship in Canada.

English Language

International students must demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency before being admitted to all FIC programs, through provision of evidence of achieving an IELTS score of 5.5 (with no band less than 5.0).  Other acceptable forms of evidence of English proficiency can be accessed through the FIC Website and the FIC Brochure.

It is acknowledged that the Canadian High Commission may, from time to time in accordance with visa assessment level guidelines, place additional English language proficiency requirements on students from particular nations or require students to undertake additional English language instruction onshore before commencing the FIC program.  Students must demonstrate a satisfactory level of English language proficiency before being admitted to the Mixed UTP Stage I and Mixed UTP Stage II and Preparation in academic Skills (PAS)Programs through provision of evidence of achieving an IELTS score of 5.0 (with no band less than 4.5), and an IELTS score of 4.5 (with no band less than 4.0) respectively.  Other acceptable forms of evidence of English proficiency can be accessed through the FIC Website andthe FIC Brochure.

Mature entry

Applicants must be 21 years or older and are assessed on the basis of work experience relevant to the program.  Applicants are required to provide information on work experience, including details of employer, length of employment, position held and duties undertaken in the role.  References and/or a statement from the employer substantiating the work claim are also required.

Verification of Qualifications

All applications are required to be accompanied by true and certified copies of documents verifying academic qualifications and results.  All international qualifications are checked against the:

  • National Recognition Information Centre for the United Kingdom (UK NARIC), which is the UK National Agency providing official source of comparison information and advice on international education and training systems and overseas skills qualifications. Offers of admission

Offers of admission articulate the program, campus, duration, fees, and enrolment terms and conditions.

Deferral

An applicant may seek to defer commencement of studies until a subsequent semester. Students wishing to defer their FIC programs must complete a Deferral Request Form to be submitted for assessment by FIC Admissions. In most cases, initial deferrals will be granted upon submission of the completed form.  A second deferral request will in most cases be granted for the reasons of lack of meeting English requirements or pending visa applications. No deferrals to exceed three.
